Instructor : David Block

Mr. Block

David Block has over 20 years experience teaching in the Anchorage School District as well as having been an instructor at Alaska Theatre of Youth, Theatre for Young People and TBA Theatre. Block was a founder of the School Through The Arts housed at West Anchorage High School and is a certified International Baccalaureate teacher. Block was named Best Teacher in Anchorage by the Anchorage Press, received the M.I.T. Most Inspirational Teacher award in 2013 and was Anchorage Education Association’s Teacher of the Year in 2012.  He is known for his innovative teaching techniques, rigorous class expectations and classroom management based on up-to-date brain and learning style research. He meets Alaska Standards as a Highly Qualified instructor in Social Studies, Language Arts and Theatre.

Block also has a lifetime of experience in the theatre and has Directed over 100 theatrical productions. He was Director of West Anchorage High School’s award winning, internationally acclaimed theatre program for a decade. He has directed at Anchorage Community Theatre, The Alaska Overnighters, the Fur Rendezvous Melodrama as well as youth theater throughout Anchorage.  Additionally, David has theatre credits in California, Hawaii, Washington and Great Britain as well as Alaska. Many former students are current professional technicians and performers on stage, screen and television. Current graduates of his instruction are attending various university and conservatory programs, such as NYU’s Tisch school.  He is Artistic Director of Midnight Sun Theatre and head instructor at Midnight Sun Performing Arts Academy.
